Rogue Software is often found as the same program with multiple aliases and/or revisions. These groups are called families of rogue software. As part of his research on rogue software, Eric L. Howes documented and explored the concept of familiar resemblances in between various rogue programs.
At the time he did his research, he came up with 26 different families. His classification for family was not only based on appearance but also on the reference databases used.
